How do you know if you should stay in your relationship? At one time or another every person in a relationship will ask that question. Maybe it’s just the doldrums or maybe there are real problems that you have been denying and now you should face. Perhaps you should spend time evaluating your relationship. Come to some conclusions, make decisions, and take action.

You shouldn’t take any decision like this, about your relationship lightly: a solid relationship is one of the most important and valuable things in any ones life. Ending a relationship without trying to nurture it and make it work is not good. Likewise staying in a bad relationship or staying in a relationship too long is not good.

A therapist can be of immense help in evaluating your relationship but many decide to do it on their own, here are some guidelines to seed your evaluation:

1. Do you fear your partner? If you do it is a sure sign that your relationship is not healthy. You shouldn’t be even the tiniest bit fearful. Relationships should be love based and where love is present fear cannot live.
2. What is the power distribution in your relationship. The more evenly that the two of you share power, the better your relationship is apt to be. You should both be in the relationship because you want to be and not for reasons like, “I don’t have enough money to leave.”
3. Is your partner dangerous. I mean can you trust them not to bet the house or the food money. Can you trust that he not engage in physically dangerous activities.
4. If you could have anyone in the world would you choose to be with your partner.
5. Do you feel like your partner encourages and supports you in the things you want to do? Alternately, does your partner belittle you when you seek to advance, improve yourself, or take on new challenges. Is your partner secure enough with himself or herself to cheer you on, or to help with some of your tasks so you can devote time to your pursuit. If not, are they really being the supportive person that you need. While you consider, do they actively help or is it just lip service.

As you evaluate your relationship with your partner keep these things in mind. It is easy to get off in some rationalization but if you come back to these questions they will keep you grounded.

Evaluating your relationship takes courage and honesty but it can bring you big rewards. A lot of times, relationships end because one of you didn’t appreciate the other enough, or so it seems. I have a friend who gets upset with her boyfriend when he doesn’t call if he is going to be late. Granted, he should call, but when he finally does she lays a whole load of frustration and anger on him.

When I look at her relationship problems, I think about my little dog: when she gets out of the front door and I have to fetch her back – should I scold her and whip her and tell her she is bad for running out, or should I praise and pet her for coming back to me?

If you have a dog, you know the answer; if I constantly scold her then she won’t want to come to me when I call. She will get to not care to be near me and on some level fear me. But petting and praising will go a long way to getting her to always come to me. There will be no fear in her and she will want to do what I want her to do and always be happy to see me.

It is the same with my friend’s boyfriend. When he does call her, or come to her, he is scolded. Does it sound to you like this might cause problems in relationships? Sometimes he hangs up if it gets really intense and then he won’t answer the phone when she calls. I don’t blame him, I wouldn’t want to hear all of that either.

My question to you is when something in your relationship is not quite right do you beat the dog or let it know that you still care for it? Do you lay a load of crap on your lover or, even if they have done something that you don’t like, do you find away to let them know that you appreciate them and then calmly discuss what may be bothering you. Marriages break up for lots of different reasons.  Sometimes is is a compounding of issues, problems built up over a long time, problems not fixed but festering.  In this situation it is tough to fix the relationship but in most cases it is usually something simple, something stupid that goes wrong and reconciliation is possible.  But no matter what the situation is there is a real possibility of getting your ex husband back.

A good marriage is two people who work together, two people who like, respect, and love themselves and each other.  In a good marriage the sum is greater than the parts.  Two people working to build a life together can accomplish wonders.  On the other hand there is no quicker path to self-destruction than two people at odds with each other, trying to hurt each other, with no respect, liking, or love.  Two people living selfishly and not contributing to each other.

To cause further problems, often one person is ready to work hard at saving the relationship. But the other person won’t look past the bad to remember the good. That person is ready to chuck it all away. And can only person save a relationship?

Sometimes one person can do it, but it’s not easy. It’s hard to stay positive and hopeful when your boyfriend of girlfriend doesn’t act or feel the same. It can start to feel like you’re fighting a losing battle.

Relationships 101 lesson #2: Keep fighting the battle, because even if the relationship doesn’t heal, it will make you a better person. That’s because the things you’ll do to try to save the relationship are simply good for you, and good for the other person, too.

It’s very important to remember the way you behaved with the relationship was new and going strong. Compare that to how you behave with that person now. And turn things around by acting the way you used to, and doing the things you used to.

Strive to be polite again just as you were in the beginning. Be thoughtful and be a good friend to the person whenever you can, even if you’re not going to get anything out of it. Don’t beg them to come back, tell them they need to come back, or threaten what will happen if they don’t come back.

When faced with someone acting like that, would you want to be with that person again? Tell yourself that you’ll survive no matter what happens, but do your very best to show them the person they want to be with again.
